AeroCity LLC:
A New Wind Turbine Design for the Urban Environment

Hosting Sponsor:
Andrews Kurth LLP

The Center for Economic and Environmental Partnership, Inc., will sponsor its next Washington, DC Energy & Environmental Funders’ meeting on Friday May 1, 2009.

Despite huge potential, wind turbines have never found a comfortable home on buildings and in cities. Now, that may be about to change.

AeroCity LLC (AWP) holds a 15 year license for a 1kW vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT) from Aerotecture International. This turbine was designed by University of Illinois professor William S. Becker and has received a great deal of television and other publicity. The license gives the Company exclusive rights to modify, manufacture, and sell the Aerotecture turbine in each state located on the East Coast of the U.S., the U.S. Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, and Russia.

These turbines, which can be mounted either vertically or horizontally, are especially designed for installations on buildings and other urban structures. As an indication of their flexibility, one type of site being considered is underneath bridges.

In November 2008, AWP was awarded a $1mm product development grant by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) to modify the Aerotecture turbine and build a commercially scalable VAWT.

AWP has partnered with several leading Universities to develop a best of breed VAWT focused on delivering value to building owners in urban environments through economical wind harvesting:

  • Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute - Center for Future Energy Systems
  • Rochester Institute of Technology - Center for Integrated Manufacturing

AWP is developing a dealer network leveraging existing solar PV dealers and other incumbent building equipment installers. Current traction includes a pipeline of over 10 interested dealers. AWP has also developed a 2kW VAWT Model: AWP2.0VAT, which is currently being marketed both directly and through its dealer relationships to building owners both commercial and governmental. The company has a pipeline of over 80 potential customers, and proposals out for over 100 turbines including NYS OGS and Westchester County Executive Offices.

AWP has applied for an additional $200,000 in funding from NYSERDA for business development funds and for $150,000 from National Renewable Energy Laboratories, DOE for additional wind tunnel testing and access.

Speaker: Russell M. Tencer, CEO, will describe the company's origin and the status of both the marketing and further technology development underway.
