Space Energy, Inc.: Beaming Solar Energy from Space
Hosting Sponsor: Dickstein Shapiro LLP
The Center for Economic and Environmental Partnership, Inc., will sponsor its next New York Energy & Environmental Funders’ meeting on Friday April 10, 2009. Beaming plentiful, clean solar energy from space to a receiver near you has long been a dream of futurists. Today, companies have the resources and technology to make it happen. Space Energy, intends to make Space Based Solar Power (SBSP) a commercially viable reality, now that market conditions have developed to this point. The company will place large arrays of solar panels in space where sunlight is converted to electricity 24 hours a day. This energy is safely transmitted back to Earth by radio wave, just like a point-to-point communication signal such as blue-tooth or a mobile phone call. Main advantages include a constant energy supply with no day/night cycle, much stronger levels of sunlight (up to 42x) and the ability to broadcast the power on demand to any location on Earth. Space Energy has invested two years and several million dollars in positioning themselves in the SBSP business. The company has recruited some of the world's top experts, is negotiating in-principle power purchase agreements and has developed a funding pathway. The company is raising, in 3 stages, $12.5M, $50M and $250M to build and launch a small demonstrator that will orbit the Earth by 2010, transmitting energy to several key sites. It will also cover total operational costs for the next two years - the amount of time it will take to complete the demonstrator. It believes a successful demonstration will trigger contracts for energy valued at $200 billion. Then it will need $12 billion to build and launch the first commercial GW strength satellite. Space Energy intends to raise this as an advance against the energy contracts. Space Energy projects that, by 2029, total transmitted energy from operational satellites will exceed one trillion kWh at a fixed cost of 16cents per kWh, or a total value of US $207B. But are you sure it's safe? As the company says on its web site, people have over 60 years history of using microwaves in terrestrial environments (radar, telecommunications industry, etc.). It is certainly not 'new', and decades of scientific studies exist verifying the safety of microwaves. Microwaves are part of the electromagnetic spectrum and are considered RF (radio frequency). Microwaves are being constantly broadcast from numerous satellites, terrestrial towers and radar systems. At any given point in a typical city, there are literally thousands of RF signals (microwaves, FM, AM, etc.) passing through people 24hrs a day. The most common forms are: cell phone conversations, air traffic control, police and taxi radios, hundreds of TV & radio channels and dozens of wireless internet signals. Stephan Tennsel, President & CEO of Space Energy will discuss the advantages of Space Based Solar Power as a green alternative that will provide clean energy solutions to the power industry around the world.
