HydroCoil Power, Inc/National Hydropower Combining Old and New Technologies to Expand Hydropower
Hosting Sponsor: Andrews Kurth LLP
The Center for Economic and Environmental Partnership, Inc., will sponsor its next Washington, DC Energy & Environmental Funders’ meeting on Friday December 5, 2008. HydroCoil Power, Inc. was formed in 2006 to commercially exploit its patented turbine blade, or "runner," set inside of a cylinder, to produce hydro electric power at low cost and with high efficiency in places with low head and low water flow. This is an improvement over most current hydropower generators, that are designed for high head (over 100 feet) applications which require large dams with several negative environmental impacts. The HydroCoil turbine is set apart by its runner, the unique screw-like blade that elongates toward the back end of the turbine. That is made by injection molding, but most other parts of the system are mass produced for applications in other industries such as the automotive industry. Thus, units are low cost per kilowatt of generating capacity; especially when compared with solar and small wind electric generating equipment. The smallest unit is 6 inches in diameter, which allows applications at a private residence, but several units can be combined to scale up applications for small business or industrial applications. Larger units are in the works. HydroCoil can use the same grid interface equipment as used by solar and wind equipment vendors. There are currently over 78,000 dams 12 feet or higher in the Unites States which were constructed for other purposes than generating electricity, such as recreation, agriculture, water supplies, and flood control. These dams can be converted to produce electricity with a relatively small incremental investment relative to the original cost of constructing the dam. The revenue from producing renewable energy under reverse metering programs can pay back the investment in generating equipment without subsidies in less than five years in most cases. Many dams built for other purposes, such as recreation by lake communities, are in need of repair. Installing HydroCoil equipment at the same time as dam repairs can significantly offset the cost of repairs, which would otherwise be a sunk cost. National Hydropower LLC National Hydropower, LLC ("NHC") seeks to develop low-impact hydroelectric power stations in the 20 kW to 5 MW range throughout the United States. Rather than create new water impoundments as in traditional hydropower development, the company looks for existing dams and run-of-river sites that lend themselves to environmentally friendly development and the opportunity to create CO2-free, renewable energy. There are hundreds of thousands of such sites across the country that include dams, water conduits, streams, canal locks, and other developable assets. NHC approaches each project with an enlightened blend of fiscal prudence, environmental stewardship, stakeholder engagement, and green technology implementation. NHC's preferred development approach is to establish a partnership with a site owner, typically through a leasing agreement, and then to construct the hydropower station using a Design/Build/Own/Operate model. NHC provides some or all of the capital investment required to develop the project which in turn allows the company to own in full, or to have a significant share in, the long-term revenue streams generated from the capital investments. In addition to providing capital, NHC brings together and manages all of the services required to execute the project, including engineering, permitting/ licensing, hydroelectric equipment procurement, construction, commissioning, and station operation. Jonathan Rosefsky, founder and Chief Scientific Officer and Thomas Miezejeski, finance and operations, will explain the company's efforts to secure test sites for its prototype units and raise $250,000 in matching funding for its application for a $500,000 grant to the New Jersey Science and Technology Administration. HydroCoil is also seeking another $500,000 to establish its distribution network. The company is forming alliances with renewable energy distributors, and other consultants and engineers working with public and private dam owners. Besides reducing our country's dependence on foreign energy supplies, energy produced at the point of consumption makes consumers less dependent on large centrally located generation facilities. National Hydropower is seeking investors on a project by project basis, which require investments from $500,000 to several million dollars. Sector Expert: Linda Church Ciocci, Executive Director, National Hydropower Association will place the HydroCoil technology in the broader hydropower context, and present recent trends in the development of hydropower. BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCHES: Jonathan Rosefsky, President, HydroCoil, is a graduate of Harvard Medical School. As a scientist he has an engineering focus, approaching life with an attitude of figuring things out, how they work, solving problems and fixing them. Over several decades he has practiced and taught pediatrics, directed a newborn intensive care unit, published journal articles, served on FDA committees, conducted clinical trials, and overseen a $1.1 billion portfolio as a pharmaceutical executive. Dr Rosefsky retired in 1999 to pursue his technology and design interests in patents and in architecture. His 4 inventions are represented in 8 domestic and 9 international patents. Thomas Miezejeski, Consultant HydroCoil and Managing Partner, National Hydropower, recently worked as a consultant to the telecommunications and payments industries. He has significant operations experience while employed in senior positions at major corporations such as Telcordia, SCM, Fotomat and Bristol Myers, as well as start-ups. Mr. Miezejeski is experienced in a wide range of market research and financial functions such as market and product assessment, strategic analysis, capital and operating budgets, and operations analysis. His knowledge extends to retail payment systems, telecommunications, marketing, and manufacturing. He received an MBA from New York University and a BBA in Finance and Investments from City College of New York. Sector Expert: Linda Church Ciocci, Executive Director, National Hydropower Association Ms Ciocci assumed her position as executive director of the National Hydropower Association in 1991. Under her leadership, NHA has doubled its membership, strengthened its fiscal position, increased its staff, adopted a member-driven committee system, and significantly increased its political stature and public voice. Linda formalized hydro's industry-wide coalition shortly after she assumed her position, building a strong partnership with EEI and APPA. She continues to nurture that relationship to this day, believing in the power of a unified industry voice. In addition to reaching out to broad national trade associations, Linda has also forged a strong working relationship with hydropower's sister renewable organizations.
