LPP Combustion, LLC: A Breakthrough in Fuel Technology: How Liquid Fuels Burn as Cleanly as Natural Gas
Hosting Sponsor: Andrews Kurth LLP
The Center for Economic and Environmental Partnership, Inc., will sponsor its next Washington, DC Energy & Environmental Funders’ meeting on Friday October 3, 2008. LPP Combustion, LLC (LPP) has developed an innovative technology to produce clean energy from conventional, renewable, and alternative liquid fuels. The patented LPP Combustion System uses a self-contained fuel preparation skid to convert conventional liquid fuels, such as kerosene or #2 fuel oil as well as alternative fuels such as biodiesel, ethanol or coal derived liquids, into a substitute natural gas, called LPP Gas. This LPP Gas can then be burned with low emissions in gas turbines or other combustion devices without modifying the combustor hardware, producing environmentally friendly power and providing substantial fuel flexibility to power generators. Current technology for burning liquid fuels results in high pollution levels compared to natural gas; hence natural gas has become the "clean" fuel of choice. However, LPP's Technology solution enables the clean combustion of liquid fuels with the same criteria pollutant emission levels as natural gas for NOx, CO and particulates, thus providing a clean alternative for power generators that can burn multiple fuels. The LPP solution offers the gas turbine power industry a high, immediate return on investment in the course of normal operations by: - reducing criteria pollutant emissions to levels comparable to those of natural gas.
- providing the cleanest use of renewable fuels by producing clean "green" power with no net CO2 emissions.
- providing "dispatchable" (on-demand) generation of renewable energy.
- providing opportunities for generation of renewable energy credits and carbon credits.
- improving the heat rate for gas turbine plants currently burning liquid fuels.
- enabling low cost liquid fuels, such as naphtha, to be used for clean power generation.
- enabling fuel flexibility thus providing arbitrage opportunities as fuel prices fluctuate.
LPP Combustion has conducted multiple successful demonstrations on commercial gas turbine combustor hardware for power generation, proving the viability of the technology. The Company has been granted two U.S. Patents with additional patents pending. The Company has also received several international patents and has patents pending in 35 countries. LPP's fuel based technology is also applicable to liquid fuel combustion devices other than gas turbines such as reciprocating engines, process, boiler and duct burners. The first commercial LPP Combustion System is being designed, engineered and built for delivery in the first half of 2009 for a gas turbine application. Leo D. Eskin, President & COO of LPP Combustion LLC., will discuss the advantages of using the LPP System to cleanly burn conventional, alternative and renewable fuels as cleanly as natural gas to provide clean energy solutions to the power industry. Sector Expert: Ben Schlesinger, President of Benjamin Schlesinger and Associates, Inc. (BSA), will discuss the relationships between the chemical and market values of various fossil fuels and biofuels, and how these relationships might impact LPP Combustion's business strategy. BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCHES: Leo D. Eskin is the President and COO of LPP Combustion, LLC. Before joining LPP, Leo was the Co-founder, President and CEO of Washington DC-based, Tech, Inc., a low-voltage construction firm which he led to an annual volume in excess of $15 million. Mr. Eskin also founded Cogent Science, LLC, specializing in numerical modeling and design of gas turbine, coal, and nuclear power plants. Previously, he participated in developing the GateCycle software program (now owned by GE), which is widely used throughout the industry for power plant design and optimization. Mr. Eskin has extensive contacts in power plants throughout the U. S. and hands-on turbine testing and operations experience. Mr. Eskin was also licensed by the NRC as a Senior Nuclear Reactor Operator. He received his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering (Minor in Electrical Engineering) from Stanford University and his Master's and Bachelor's degrees in Mechanical Engineering from the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. Dr. Benjamin Schlesinger, founding president of BSA Inc., is one of North America's leading independent energy consultants, specializing in gas and electricity marketing, pricing, infrastructure, trading practices, strategic planning, and power plant development worldwide.
