HydroCoil Power, Inc.:
Combining Old and New Technology
for Low-Head Hydroelectric Power

Hosting Sponsor:
Torys LLP

Regional Co-Host:
The Environmental Business Association of New York State, Inc.

The Center for Economic and Environmental Partnership, Inc., will sponsor its next New York Energy & Environmental Funders’ meeting on Friday March 14th, 2008.

HydroCoil Power, Inc. was formed in 2006 to commercially exploit its patented turbine or "runner" to produce hydro electric power (renewable energy) in places with low head and low water flow. Most current hydropower equipment is designed for high head (over 100 feet) applications, which require large dams with several negative environmental impacts.

There are currently over 78,000 dams 12 feet or higher in the Unites States which were constructed for other purposes than generating electricity, such as recreation, agriculture, water supplies, and flood control. These dams can be converted to produce electricity with a relatively small incremental investment relative to the original cost of constructing the dam. The revenue from producing renewable energy under reverse metering programs can pay back the investment in generating equipment without subsidies in less than five years in most cases.

Many dams built for other purposes, such as recreation by lake communities, are in need of repair. Installing HydroCoil equipment at the same time as dams are repaired can significantly reduce the cost of repairs. Further along, the company could install units in water or sewage pipes in buildings, fresh water and sewage treatment systems, and industrial sites where liquids flow with sufficient power.

With the exception of the runner (the unique screw-like blade in the HydroCoil), which can be made by injection molding, most other parts of the HydroCoil system are mass produced for applications in other industries such as the automotive industry. Thus, units are low cost per kilowatt of generating capacity; especially when compared with solar and small wind electric generating equipment. The smallest unit is 6 inches in diameter, which allows applications at a private residence, but several units can be combined to scale up applications for small business or industrial applications. HydroCoil can use the same grid interface equipment as used by solar and wind equipment vendors.

Jonathan Rosefsky, founder and Chief Scientific Officer and Thomas Miezejeski, finance and operations, will explain the company's efforts to secure test sites for its prototype units and $250,000 matching funding for its application for a $500,000 grant to the New Jersey Science and Technology Administration. The company is also seeking another $500,000 to establish its distribution network. The company is forming alliances with renewable energy distributors, and other consultants and engineers working with public and private dam owners. Besides reducing our country's dependence on foreign energy supplies, energy produced at the point of consumption makes consumers less dependent on large centrally located generation facilities.

Sector Expert: Chris Haun Senior Policy Advisor, New Jersey Board of Public Utilities will provide a brief perspective on the efforts to bring more renewable energy of all kinds-including Class 1 and Class2-to New Jersey.

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCHES:

Jonathan Rosefsky, M.D., President, HydroCoil Power, Inc., is a graduate of Harvard Medical School. As a scientist he has an engineering focus, approaching life with an attitude of figuring things out, how they work, solving problems and fixing them. Over several decades he has practiced and taught pediatrics, directed a newborn intensive care unit, published journal articles, served on FDA committees, conducted clinical trials, and overseen a $1.1 billion portfolio as a pharmaceutical executive. Dr. Rosefsky retired in 1999 to pursue his technology and design interests in patents and in architecture. His 4 inventions are represented in 8 domestic and 9 international patents.

Thomas Miezejeski, Operations & Finance, HydroCoil Power, Inc., is experienced in a wide range of market research and financial functions such as market and product assessment, strategic analysis, capital and operating budgets, and operations analysis. His knowledge extends to retail payment systems, telecommunications, marketing, and manufacturing.

Recently, he worked as a consultant to the telecommunications and payments industries, and gained significant operations experience while employed in senior positions at major corporations such as Telcordia, SCM, Fotomat and Bristol Myers, as well as start-ups.

Mr. Miezejeski received an MBA from New York University and a BBA in Finance and Investments from City College of New York.

Chris Haun, PE, LEED®AP, has been an energy and environmental professional throughout his career at a New York City utility, two renewable energy companies and a real estate planning and development firm. Currently, Mr. Haun is Senior Energy Policy Advisor with the NJ Board of Public Utilities, the regulatory agency overseeing the state's utilities, where he is helping create NJ's new Energy Master Plan and leads the Electricity Working Group.

While at Brooklyn Union Gas, Chris brought natural gas to Governors Island, worked with NYC Tansit Authority on natural gas busses, helped NYC schools convert from coal to natural gas, and directed an award-winning venture fund a KeySpan that won a prestigious corporate social responsibility award.

He followed his passion for green energy working at two cutting edge and ultimately bleeding edge technology firms- Energy Photovoltaics, a NJ based solar PV firm that made the panels for the Condé Nast Building at 4 Times Square, and H Power, a fuel cell company, where he installed fuel cell in Yellowstone National Park. He then financed energy efficiency projects, working through NYSERDA.

Mr. Haun is a Cornell University engineering graduate and earned an MPA in public finance from NYU. He has been a part time Alpine Ski Instructor in Vermont for several years, and serves on the boards of the NY Conservation Education Fund and the Brooklyn Center for the Urban Environment.
