Register now for the June 18, 2004 Meeting
The Center for Economic and Environmental Partnership, Inc., will sponsor the meeting New England Energy & Environmental Funders on Friday, June 18, 2004.
William (Bill) Smith, President , will describe Infinity Fuel Cells’ concentration on regenerative fuel cells, which are made with its proprietary open architecture, using components (i.e. fuel cells, hydrogen generators, renewable energy generators and hydrogen storage tanks) developed by other companies. Infinity’s regenerative fuel cells use electricity generated by renewable energy sources, e.g. solar, wind, biomass, to produce hydrogen from water through an electrolysis process. The hydrogen is then stored and used to generate electricity when the renewable energy source is not generating.
Infinity is developing proprietary technologies in addition to integrating other technologies. They are driving the units toward simpler systems, with lower balance of plant costs. Their systems are designed to be completely independent of the type of renewable power they use. Functionally they operate like a battery, but offer the ability to store large amounts of energy, as hydrogen, at low cost, without self-discharge or depth of discharge limitations. Infinity is currently raising $2 million dollars, which they expect will take them through initial development. Once they have funding in place, they will have a prototype in the field in nine months and can then go to commercial production in two years. Sector Expert: Alfred Meyer, Fuel Cell Consultant, will discuss the current state of the fuel cell industry, including the most promising technologies and uses of fuel cells. Mr. Meyer has spent 40 years in the fuel cell industry, mostly at United Technologies, where he worked on a range of fuel cell activities.

Bios:
William Smith is the founder of Infinity Fuel Cell and Hydrogen, LLC, a Backup Power - Regenerative Fuel Cell company. He is also one of the co-founders of Proton Energy Systems, a PEM products company. From Proton's first backyard organizing meetings in 1994 Proton has grown to become a public company with over 100 employees, revenue of over $20 million/yr, $80 million in cash and a market capitalization of over $100 million. At Proton, Bill was instrumental in creating Proton's initial company concept, recruiting several members of the founding team and leading initial sales, marketing and business development activities. He served as Proton’s Vice President of Business Development since the company’s formal inception in 1996 until leaving to start Infinity in 2002. Since 2002 Proton has grown to include wind and solar products and is now known as Distributed Energy Systems Corp. While at Proton, Bill served on the National Hydrogen Association Board of Directors as a small business representative.
From 1986 to 1996, Bill led various business development activities for advanced PEM products at the Hamilton Sundstrand Division of United Technologies Corporation. These included PEM products for commercial, military and NASA applications such as oxygen generators, hydrogen generators and regenerative fuel cells. Prior to joining United Technologies Mr. Smith was responsible for business development and proposals for advanced large optical systems at Perkin-Elmer in Norwalk, CT. He holds numerous patents in the field of PEM technology and actively publishes in the field. Mr. Smith received his undergraduate degree in Physics from the University of Connecticut, and an MBA from the University of Massachusetts.
Alfred Meyer’s career in the business of fuel cells spans 42 years. Introduced to fuel cells at Pratt & Whitney Aircraft, he was a member of the Apollo fuel cell development team. He went on to manage the development of a variety of new technologies for use in the fuel cell systems. These include the low temperature cell technology that now flies aboard the Space Shuttle Orbiter; UTC’s first efforts to generate hydrogen from military, commercial and industrial fuels such as JP-8, diesel fuel, No.2 oil and coal liquids; and, molten carbonate and solid oxide fuel cells. He was responsible for transferring to UTC the PEM fuel cell technology it purchased from General Electric Corporation. He founded UTC’s automotive fuel cell business based on this technology. He established business relationships between UTC and Ford Motor Company, Daimler, Volkswagen, BMW, MAN, GM and others for development of products for both propulsion and auxiliary power systems. He now consultants in the areas of fuel cell applications and business.
